SELF KEEPS EM LAUGHING
Over 350 Jayhawks gathered at the Ramada Inn for fellowship and
encouragement at a time when the men's basketball future for this season
was questionable. Perhaps the most memorable moment came when Coach was
discussing the then-problematic free throw problem. He suggested that
fans might want to change their free throw "both hands in the air" sign
to a "clasped hands" in the air sign to pray that the ball goes in. The
local alumni band again provided the extra zip which other similar
gatherings across the state can't match. TJC members also were able to
pick up the new cooler bag which serves as this year's membership
"gift".

HAWKWATCHES GROWING IN POPULARITY
Over 80 TJC members and guests attended the ISU Hawkwatch at Jeremiah's
Live, Huntoon and Gage. The main part of the Hawkwatch, including door
prize drawing, takes place in the non-smoking room with a huge-screen
TV. Smokers can either step out into the smoking section of the bar or
watch the game in the smoking section and just come in for the drawing.
Kids can feel very comfortable in the non-smoking part, and more and
more are coming along. Look at the calendar above for remaining dates.

NEXT MEMBERSHIP CONTEST BEGINS
Any TJC member can compete in the current membership contest to sign up
brand-new members to TJC. Brand-new members get the usual membership
packet of a license plate, buttons, cards and the 2006 cooler bag, but
brand-new members also get a free subscription to Jayhawk Illustrated.
The person who signs up the most brand-new members before the Mangino
summer picnic (we'll establish a final contest date when we know the
Mangino picnic date) gets two seats at Coach Mangino's table at the
picnic as well as 2 tickets to a football game. All you have to do is
attach a note to each new membership you sign up--you can even write on
the actual membership form--your name and "membership contest." Our
membership chair, Nancy Kelley, keeps track of all contest memberships
as they come in. Susan Draffan won the most recent TJC membership
contest. The Jayhawk Illustrated offer runs
through the month of March, so act quickly!

RECRUITING GOOD STUDENTS FOR KU
Don't ever make any contact with a prospective student athlete without
first visiting with the compliance office at the athletic department.
We don't ever want any TJC member involved in any action that can hurt
our teams and the university. If you think KU should take a look at a
given high-school athlete, contact KU Athletics and pass on your tip.
However, you can help KU recruit non-athletes by
passing on contact information to the Department of Admissions who will
be sure to send appropriate information and letters to the high school
student. Basic requests for info can be made by emailing adm@mail.ku.edu.
If you know of a good student that could use some special attention such
as particular information about a specific program, you can contact Lisa
Pinamonti Kress directly at kpkress@ku.edu. In its continuing efforts
to achieve Top-25 public university status, KU wants to know about good
students and do everything it can to get them to enroll at KU.

WINNINGEST TEAMS PLAY WHERE?
The three basketball teams with the most all-time wins are Kentucky,
North Carolina and KU with KU continually chasing North Carolina for
second place. The three teams play home games in Rupp Arena, The Dean
Dome and Allen Fieldhouse--all three named for KU graduates.

16,300 NOT THE NORM (Or the Quin either)
KU's 16,300 seat Allen Fieldhouse is perpetually sold out with some
tickets sold a second time during semester breaks. The Lawrence
Journal-World reports that no other Big 12 teams draw regular sellouts.
Only four other teams (Texas, Iowa State, Oklahoma & Oklahoma State)
average more than 11,000. Nebraska draws almost 9,000, but no other Big
12 team is averaging 8,000 a game, including the place upriver and the
home of Norm and the soon-to-be-former home of Quin down the river.

BEAKS & TAILS
Longtime
former marching band director Bob Foster was recently inducted into the
National Band Association Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors.
This
season marks the first time Kansas Freshmen have been named Big 12
Rookie of the Week for three different weeks--Brandon Rush twice and
Mario Chalmers once--and the season's not over!
The
TJC board held its January 3 meeting at the Wagnon center, and many
board members stayed to cheer on the women's basketball team to victory
over Texas.
The
Allen Fieldhouse scoreboard operators are adding new tricks and shows,
showing steady progress through the season. The football scoreboard has
become an integral part of KU's football experience, and the basketball
board is catching up quickly.
Watch
for the TJC ad in three upcoming issues of Jayhawk Illustrated. TJC is
grateful to Jayhawk Illustrated for its underwriting of much of the
expense of our annual tailgate party and especially for this year's
offer of a free year's subscription to our brand-new members.
Three
of the four 2006 inductees to the Topeka Business Hall of Fame are KU
grads: Andy Chandler, '48; Jack Dicus, '55; and the late Balfour
Jeffrey, '28. Both Chandler and Dicus are TJC members.
CONGRATULATIONS! The Business Hall of Fame is located at the Topeka
Capital Journal and is a project of Northeast Kansas Junior Achievement.
TJC member Linda Smith is executive director of NE KS JA.

STOLEN FROM THE MOST RECENT KU ALUMNI MAGAZINE
( With editorial comment):
In your editor's opinion, the KU Alumni magazine by
itself is easily worth the cost of Alumni Association membership
($50/yr--prices also available for lifetime membership). Anyone can
join. You don't have to be an alum. Anyway, from this month's edition--
Topeka
sophomore Sam Schneider and a couple friends have started Royal Canadian
Mounted Leaf Service--a Lawrence leaf raking service in which the
workers wear uniforms of the RCMP--attracting lots of attention and new
customers while they work.
Another group
of students has resurrected the KU juggling club. (Wonder if they juggle
clubs?)
The late
Larry Haskin, Phd '60 received a posthumous honor of having a 2 mile
long rock outcropping named "Haskin Ridge." The 348 ft tall ridge is on
Mars. (Crimson & Blue on Red Planet?)
Mark Edom of
Leawood drives a Harley custom-painted with KU campus scenes and one
fast-looking Jayhawk. (Does that make his wife a biker Jayhawk chick?)
KU's Johnson
County Edwards campus is expected to soon see the nation's third
Confucius Institute, a joint program with China's Ministry of Education
which will offer Chinese language courses and promote tourism in China.
Survivor
winner, former Miss Kansas-USA and former KU student and still-KU fan
Danni Boatwright is reported by her mother as such a devoted fan that
when 6 years old, whenever KU lost a basketball game, Danni would go to
her room and cry.
