CROWDS
GROWING AT TJC FOOTBALL SPEAKERS/GAME TAPE EVENTS
Both football game tape/discussion events have been well-attended at
Jeremiah's Live in September and October. TJC members and guests are
invited to this free event, the next set for Tuesday, Nov 14 at 6:30 (doors
open at 6). TJC's board meets at 5:30 right before the event, and members
are always welcome at board meetings. KU All-American John Hadl was the
special guest at the September event. Former KU player (now at the Williams
Fund) Pat Henderson shows game highlight tapes and gives special insider
insight into what's going right (and wrong) with each featured game.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR
DECEMBER 18
Coach Bill Self's annual luncheon is scheduled for December 18 with further
details coming later. Part of a statewide tour, the event will again be
managed by KU instead of TJC which means that we won't be able to offer
discounted tickets to members. Coach Bonnie Henrickson will also speak.
TJC will have a membership booth to process 2007 renewals, and our 2007
license tags are here and ready to be picked up at the lunch along with 2007
membership cards. Don't miss them.

WESTBORO MART AWASH IN BLUE at ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION BASH FOR MAX
September 22 saw many KU fans and Max Falkenstien friends and admirers
gather for the unveiling of the new portrait of Max done by local artist
Robert Swain. Local merchants featured specials, lots of treats were
consumed, the Topeka High jazz band provided music (including the KU fight
song), and TJC gave out Jayhawk stickers.

KU SHAWNEE
COUNTY HONORS BANQUET SET NOVEMBER 14
Since 1971, the KU Alumni Association has honored local high school seniors
who academically achieve at the top of their class. The students receive a
hardcover American Heritage Dictionary and a certificate naming them a
Kansas Honors Scholar. All high schools in Shawnee County send
delegations. Those attending feast on a buffet dinner and are entertained
by current KU music students. Anyone is welcome to come. The dinner starts
at 6:30 with the program at 7:30pm at the Holidome, 6th & Fairlawn. Cost is
$13.50. For further information or reservations, call Marcia Cassidy at
234-5098. TJC is again sponsoring a table at the event and providing
greeters for the event.

TJC TAILGATE NOT GOING
TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR
As noted in last month's newsletter, TJC lost its sponsor for the past
year's tailgate lunch at a home football game. We thought we had another
sponsor lined up, but after several weeks of planning, they also recently
backed out. The actual cost of a tailgate event on the hill (tent, food
which must be catered from the Union, and beverages) is probably more than
$30 per person, a cost which the TJC board thinks is too high to pass on to
members. The per person cost last year was $10 because TJC picked up some
of the cost and the bulk of the cost was paid by our co-sponsors. The board
regrets not being able to provide this popular event this year and plans to
start early to find new co-sponsors for next year.

EDITORIAL COMMENT--DON'T
BE A DON DAVIS!
KU men's basketball lost a scholarship for the next two years essentially
because of Don Davis. Who's Don Davis? A KU booster in Oklahoma City who
gave impermissible benefits to JR Giddens and Darnell Jackson. If you are
reading this, you are likely a member of the Topeka Jayhawk Club. If you
are a member of this organization, the Williams Fund or the Alumni
Association or have some other affiliation with KU, YOU ARE A BOOSTER in the
eyes of the NCAA. If you screw up, KU pays with sanctions. Never, ever
have contact with a recruit, a potential recruit or a KU player without
considering the NCAA legality of the contact. If you have any question,
call the KU compliance office at 785 864-4200. You can also download a
helpful compliance brochure at
http://kuathletics.cstv.com/compliance/kan-compliance.html .

BEAKS &
TAILS
Planning is
underway for Hawkwatch basketball parties at Jeremiah's Live at Huntoon
and Gage. The board has tentatively agreed to three large events during
the season along with tournament parties depending on when the
tournament games are scheduled which affects the availability of the
non-smoking room. We experienced capacity crowds last year and are
expecting the same this year. All members and guests are welcome, and
kids will be comfortable in the non-smoking room. It's not quite the
same as being at the game, but it's as close as we can make it to a
game-day experience.
Information is
not yet available for this year's Bill Self Holiday Basketball Clinic for
kids. Watch for upcoming info on the KU website, www.kuathletics.com
The
organizational meeting of a local chapter of the KU Alumni association is
planned for early December. The local alumni association chapter will
organize events for KU not related to athletics. TJC will still organize
athletic-related events.
KU
Alumni Association sponsors a tailgate at every home game, 2 hours before
kickoff. Everyone is welcome. Alumni Association members are $8,
Non-members $12 and kids 6-12 $5. Kids 5 and under eat for free. Tailgate
is inside at the Adams Alumni Association northeast across from the union.
KU Williams Fund
staffers drive two golf-carts (one a very spiffy crimson and blue) around
parking lots before and after football games offering free rides to those
needing a lift. A great service to loyal Jayhawks. Thank you, Williams Fund
(and especially Louise Ecord)!
KU Osher
Lifelong Learning Institute offers continuing education classes of widely
varied interests from theology to art to drama to jazz, Arlington Cemetery,
city government...and, now, KU athletics. You can join the institute for
$60 and take unlimited classes during the fall (some have already
occurred). A $150 membership covers fall 2006, spring and summer, 2007.
Most classes are in Lawrence, but some are taught in Topeka. The KU
athletics class is November 11 and features Associate Athletic Director
James Marchiony in a two-hour class and a special tour of the Booth Hall of
Athletics. For further info,
www.continuingEd.ku.edu
or call 785-864-4871.
