HAWKWATCHES SET
The TJC board has decided to have two main regular season Hawkwatch parties this season and make a bigger production out of each.  Mark down January 13 for the ISU game and February 10 for MU. We'll also be gathering for Big 12 and NCAA tournament games depending on scheduling and availability of the non-smoking room at Jeremiahs'.  Don't miss the Hawkwatches.  All will be held at Jeremiah's Live in Gage Shopping Center in the Non-Smoking room (north end of bar).  The big-screen is big and the atmosphere is kid-friendly (even red and blue babies have been known to attend and cheer.)  It's buy your own meals/drinks, but prizes are given out and you can bask in the warmth of an afternoon with fellow Jayhawks.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED WRITER HAS AN OPINION
Most all KU folks have seen or heard about the KU basketball SI cover issued the same day the team took it on the chin from Oral Roberts.  Many KU folks missed an earlier SI basketball issue discussing the new coach up the river a few miles. From the editorial, a few nuggets: " In
four of nine reporting years at Cincinnati his graduation rate was 0.0 -- meaning Huggins graduated as many people as the local cemetery." " His temper is factory-set to "quick" and his ethics to "slick," and he'll sign a cottonmouth if he thinks he can rebound." And the final advice to that other school from SI: "After a few seasons you will want to get rid of  your used Bob Huggins the way Quasimodo wanted to get rid of his hump. This will not be cheap. It cost Cincinnati president Nancy Zimpher $3 million to fire him. Why'd she do it? Because, she said, 'character counts.'"  Guess we'll see if SI knows what it's talking about.  And, in the meantime, SI can leave our guys off the cover, thank you very much.

AND YET MORE...
And while your editor is raising purple hackles, he's often wondered how history is taught up the river where bragging is always qualified in the way FOX news might discuss someone's voting record.  Now I've discovered this anonymous essay from the internet which captures perfectly what I've always thought (Wish I'd written it, darnit) :

"
Here at Kansas State we only care about scoreboard. Except when we don't have it, in which case we care about history. But only recent history. Kind of recent. About eleven years of it. But not the last eleven years. Like, subtract the last two years, and then the previous eleven years. That's the kind of recent history we're talking about. Except in basketball, in which case history is utterly irrelevant, and only the future which hasn't happened yet matters, except when we're trying to convince people we have a basketball school, in which case history matters, but only the last forty years. Or rather, the last forty years before the last twenty years."

BEAKS & TAILS
TJC members were spotted at the Florida game in Las Vegas and the DePaul game in Chicago during the non-conference basketball season.

All KU Basketball fans should visit the James Naismith grave and Naismith Memorial at the Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery (East from Massachusetts on 15th on south side of street).  To find the Naismith grave, go as far straight south as you can in the cemetery and park.  Walk toward the obelisk marker at the center of the south boundary of the cemetery and go about 15 feet west.  If the obelisk marker were the center of a clock, the grave is at about 4:30.  Phog Allen is buried across the street in Oak Hill Cemetery.  As soon as your editor scopes it out, he'll pass along directions.

KU architecture students have won "Architecture" magazines national "home of the year" award again for the second time in three years. The modular home can be seen at 534 Riverview Ave in the Strawberry Hill section of Kansas City, Kansas.

Kansas University debate coach Scott Harris has been named Coach of the Year by the National Debate Tournament.

A Shawnee County chapter of the KU Alumni Association is organizing this month.  The chapter will work on promoting KU locally in all areas except sports which will continue to be the function of TJC.

The Alumni Association's KU Honors Banquet was held November 14 with yet another capacity crowd of Top 10% area high school seniors and their parents.  Entertainment was provided by KU music students, and the address was given by Vice Chancellor for External Affairs David Adkins.  This was the last banquet to be hosted by TJC members and longtime KU volunteers Mike & Marcia Cassidy.  For literally decades of work, Thanks, Cassidys!

Dartmouth's 32 point total was the least ever scored in Allen Fieldhouse history.
