LAST CALL FOR ST PAT'S PARADE
If you want to have a KU-decorated vehicle in the March 17 (Saturday) parade, please call Larry Tenopir, 233-9467.  On parade day, all TJC members are invited to walk or ride with us.  Look on 8th street north of the Capitol for our bandwagon and cars. If you can't find us, call Larry at 224-3501.  WANTED: We need a cheerleader, either a former cheerleader or just someone who's uninhibited and is willing to ride in a convertible and try to get kids (and KU fans) to do KU cheers as our parade contingent goes down the street.  Could be 2 people working together. Also could use loan of a hand-held, battery-powered megaphone or amplifier.

TOPEKA JAYHAWK CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Recipient of the 2006-2007 Topeka Jayhawk Club scholarship Gary Woodland recently sent a thank-you note to TJC President, Justin Glasgow.  Gary is originally from Topeka and is a senior in sociology who is on the golf team. Gary thanks all for their generosity in providing him with a quality KU education.  Gary recently won the All-American Golf Classic in Houston and led the KU team to the team victory, edging out Lamar U, ranked 3rd nationally.  Gary is also one of 22 college golfers on the watch list for the Hogan Award for best collegiate golfer of the year.

MIZZOU HAWKWATCH SETS RECORD
Easily 200 Jayhawk fans crammed the non-smoking room at Jeremiah's Live for the Mizzou Hawkwatch.  The smoking section also had many Hawk fans and three Mizzou fans (who did not have a good time).

KU ATTAINS NATIONAL RECORD OF MOST CONFERENCE CHAMPSIONSHIPS  With the 2007 regular season Big 12 Conference Championship in men's basketball, KU moves into sole ownership of first place in most regular season conference championships in the US.  KU and Kentucky were tied for the past year at 49.  KU now has 50.  Other national leaders are Penn with 36 and North Carolina and Utah, tied at 31.

AND NOW, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO'VE BEEN REQUESTING MORE HUMOR, WE PRESENT--PURPLE/BLACK--IT'S ALL THE COLOR OF BRUISING
(Warning: This story may not be suitable for readers of the SILO TECH persuasion or their sympathizers--please turn away now to avoid gettin' all riled up)

Perhaps the best part of college athletics is the the camaraderie and give-and-take between fans of rival universities.  Now, there are many who think that only MIZZOU is KU's "rival", and that we should treat our brethren up the river with some sort of sympathy and kindness.  But ask any K-Stater, and they'll tell you they consider KU their main rival. And for those of us who grew up near the former land of the Purple and who now live in the Topeka area which sometimes seems like a border city, we agree that K-State is our "other" rival.  So, K-State fans--here's the respect you've been demanding as our other "rival", and KU fans, here's some ammunition for your next Snob Hill/Silo Tech water cooler confrontation.

When it comes to friendly "give and take", there's oh-so-much material coming out of the 24th win by KU in Manhattan, it's hard to know where to begin.  Your editor was frankly amazed at the sheer volume of K-State smack-talking BEFORE the game.  I've always preferred the smack-talk delivered AFTER the team has delivered the victory.  Course, come to think about it, if they didn't smack-talk BEFORE the game, when would they?

Now, after our 24th basketball win in Manhattan, Staters actually retort with, "Who went to a bowl game?"  The appropriate response to that retort is, simply, "39-20".  Or the more involved, "Why did you all drive 800 miles to watch K-State get creamed in a bowl game when you could have seen the same thing just 23 miles east?"

Perhaps the lamest story out of the basketball game is that Staters actually passed out a crib sheet for cheering.  Many predicted cheating with the coming of Huggins, who knew it would start with cheering?  Your editor has obtained a copy of the K-State cheering crib sheet.  Among the most entertaining entries:

They listed all KU players' names and numbers and the first names of their mothers to make personal insults easier. Their mothers!  You'd think some of these staters did a couple years at MIZZOU in the Antlers section.

"Clap until our first bucket-- (Editor: that might take a while) After the tip, start clapping at an even pace until we score.  Don't let up for anything other than us shooting free throws. Think about clapping to the fight song or the Wabash."  (Editor: Coming soon from K-State Press--'CLAPPING FOR IDIOTS-A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PLACING ONE HAND AGAINST THE OTHER TO PRODUCE A SNAPPY NOISE')

"Blocks-Shake your finger at the opponent, Jason Bennett style" (Editor: One instruction they didn't have much use for.)

I'll omit some of the more personal and sexually/oriented comments but include part of my favorite instruction--"Final Minute--In the final minute of tonight's victory, start chanting K-S-U, K-S-U, at an even pace...."  (Editor: tee hee)

And we can't leave the little crabapple until we've discussed the new K-State color scheme--Black.  Sportswriters predicted how Huggins likes black.  Course his personal blending of black and purple was reminiscent of a Vegas lounge singer about to belt out--"What's New Pussycat?" The answer to that musical question, of course, is, "Not much new--24 and counting".

All sorts of folks have suggested alternate colors for K-State fans to wear at next year's game--the most popular being silver for our 25th year.  Other suggestions have included green, the color of Huggins' face during much of the game; orange, the color of jumpsuits familiar to some of Huggins' recruits and former players; or puce, just 'cause it's fun to say.  In any event, he might want to steer clear of black since that's the color of graduation robes--and in 4 of his 9 years at Cincinnati, NOT ONE of his players got to wear black when it counted.

AND YET MORE....
And just when you thought that the annual K-State humor had ended, the KSU athletic department released an open letter telling their fans to stop bringing chickens to KU games.  While it's about time that K-State stopped the animal cruelty, the language of the letter has some unintended humor.  "
The University has a long-standing policy that considers live animals (except guide animals) at athletics events to be contraband."  Were that the case, one wonders which university personnel at the Bramlage doors have for decades apparently not noticed when various students have shown up with dates who cluck.  Then, there's the letter's conclusion, "Kansas State has high standards for the behavior of its students, fans and supporters at athletics events."  High standards for students, fans and supporters--but not coaches?

BUT, SERIOUSLY, FOLKS....
After paying them back for their pre-game smack-talking, be kind to our purple brethren.  Goodness knows those of us who suffered through 35 years of football losses to Nebraska can relate to a streak that you sometimes wonder will ever end.  But streaks do end, and when this one does--whatever color they're wearing at that game, your editor knows he'll have to pay for the humor he pokes here.  But until then...
