STILL LOOKING....
Your editor apologizes for his tardiness in getting this issue out. He's still wishing someone would agree to take on his 13-year job.  In any event, lots of great stuff has gone on since our last newsletter.  Most you already know. Some you may not.  It's always great to be a Jayhawk, but the past six months have been especially sweet.

POURING RAIN DOESN'T DAMPEN JAYHAWKS AT ST. PAT'S PARADE
Yes, it poured. And poured.  So we cancelled the band and bandwagon at the last minute.  But most of our vehicles showed up.  Beverly Bernardi and a couple of very hardy young twirlers even marched part of the route.  Baby Jay showed up but rode in one of our two motor homes.  Scheduling this year allowed the KU Alumni Association trailer to be part of our contingent as well.  This year we provided a tailgating experience for our contingent's participants with rolls, muffins and coffee/hot chocolate. Of course, the tailgating took place INSIDE the motor homes, but it worked and was fun.  And, best of all, we WON, this year taking home the prize for best Non-float entry.  Someday, we'll get out all our plaques for display at one of our events.

KU Day at the Capitol Big Success
The KU Alumni Association and the university put on the annual KU Day in the Capitol on June 10.  Shawnee County alumni board members assisted with the schmoozing of legislators, prospective students and other guests.  The exhibitions ranged from the KU Sax Quartet to the Engineering School's miniature race car.  Free giveaways for all and lunch for the legislators attracted a big crowd.  The annual event helps tell KU's story to the lawmakers and members of the public.  Stop by next year!

Hawkwatches Galore
A change in weekend policy by Jeremiah Bullfrog's allowed TJC to hold Hawkwatch parties for all tournament games this year.  Capacity crowds in the non-smoking room cheered on the Hawks, including the delirious final game which had everyone up, screaming and dancing in the aisles.  It wasn't quite San Antonio, but I think we were almost as close to the action than some of those seats in the Dome.

NEW BILLBOARD UP
Our billboard on westbound I-70 (approximately Paxico) has been replaced to undo the effects of the last set of K-State vandals.  The new board was a cost-sharing effort of TJC and the KU Alumni Association. KU Alumni is looking for KU fans/alumni along major roads who would donate use of their land for more billboards promoting KU.  The Association has budgeted for 12 more billboards next year, so they are looking now for possible sites.  If you have land or know any KU people who would let the association erect a billboard, please call local alumni president Larry Tenopir at 233-9467.

SHAWNEE COUNTY ALUMNI NEWS
The new local chapter of the KU Alumni Association has been involved in many activities during its first few months of existence including assisting at two Hawktalk events for prospective students, KU Day at the Capitol, a demonstration by the KU Debate #1 national team, and a KU law alumni luncheon.  Upcoming events are a June 16 board/membership meeting with KU Admissions staff explaining contacts they make with prospective students and discussing how local alumni/fans could help promote the recruitment of good students to KU.  Also upcoming is a July 29 Jayhawk Generations Picnic for incoming KU freshmen from Shawnee County.  Planned for the fall are events for alumni from the Education and Business Schools and an evening with KU Fine Arts.

YOU JUST MIGHT BE.....
I hope you've all heard the radio ad from the local KIA dealer which uses a Jeff Foxworthy "You just might be a redneck" approach to say things like, "If you are driving a clunker and want a new car for under $12,000, you just might be a KIA driver".  After several of those, the commercial gives a standard kind of appeal but then closes with, "If you learned how to chew tobacco from your grandmother, you just might be a MIZZOU fan."

BEAKS & TALES--

SOONERS LUV THE HAWKS!

It's rare to see fans of any university praising another  (and don't hold your breath to see any in this newsletter :) )--but a couple of OU fans attended the KU-OU game earlier this year and wrote about it on soonersports.com, showing the kind of awe and respect we hope visitors will feel when attending a game in Allen Fieldhouse for the first time.  To check it out--Sooner Sports

This year's football Otto Schnellbacher Award (Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year) went to A.J. Steward.

RECRUIT A JAYHAWK! You can add a son, daughter or friend of the family on the KU recruitment list to receive mailings as early as 6th grade. www.admissions.ku.edu/mailinglist

Break out the tissues and then watch--Click Here to see Hunter Feyerherm, 9, who lost his 7-yo sister to a brain tumor in October and received this phone call from Coach Bill Self in December.  Break out your tissues before you watch it.

AND JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN'T GET THIS EMAIL FROM EVERYONE YOU KNOW

A man in Topeka, Kansas decided to write a book about churches around the country.  He started by flying to San Francisco and started working east from there.  Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes.  He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which read 'Calls: $10,000 a minute.'  Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to heaven and if someone pays the price he can talk directly to GOD.

The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way.  As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, and around the United States, he found more phones, with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrived in back in Kansas.  Upon entering a church in Minneola, he saw the usual golden telephone.  But THIS time, the sign read 'Calls: 35 cents.'  Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor, 'Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to GOD, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute.  Your sign reads only 35 cents a call.  Why so low?'

The pastor, smiling benignly, replied, 'Son, you're in Kansas, home of the Jayhawks… You're in God's Country, so it's a local call.'
