SUMMER PICNIC 1999
Topeka Jayhawk Club
Topeka West Holidome, Fairlawn & I-70
Sunday, August 8, 5:00 pm
Special guest: Coach Terry Allen
Baby Jay, Topeka KU Alumni Band
Special KU raffle
$11 non-members; $9 members; kids, 12 & under, FREE

Our annual Summer Picnic will take place on Sunday, August 8, with doors open at 5:00 p.m., barbecue at 5:45, program at 6:15. Besides Coach Allen, assistant coaches & coaches of other sports have been invited, and some football players may also attend.

Baby Jay will be present and available for pictures. Bring your own camera if you want, or board members will be available to take Polaroid shots for a small donation. We're planning party favors for the kids, and door prizes will be awarded. Club license plates will be available at $5 for members and $10 for non-members, and golf caps are available for $10.

We will have a special raffle of KU gifts with all proceeds from the raffle going to our scholarship fund at KU. A team-autographed football and basketball, a Gale Sayers autographed football (if it arrives in time), a football "experience", a TJC golf cap autographed by both Coach Williams and Coach Allen, and various other KU items will be prizes. Tickets will be available at the picnic for $1 or 6 for $5.

Several vendors are expected to have various Jayhawk paraphernalia for sale, so bring your credit cards and do your Christmas shopping. A percentage of all sales will be donated to the Topeka Jayhawk Club.

You will get the official flyer from KU shortly after you receive this newsletter. KU mails to all our members and all season ticket holders. If you hold season tickets, you’ll likely get two copies of the flyer since it’s less expensive for KU to mail the duplicates than to use staff time to eliminate duplications. So if you get an extra flyer, take it to work and give it to someone who might be interested.

Reservations are requested before August 5 by sending your checks made payable to KUAC and sent to Topeka Area Jayhawk Club, 210 Wagnon Student Athlete Center, Univ of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045. Additional information or last minute reservations should be made by calling Larry Tenopir at 233-9467.

TOPEKANS ENSHRINED

Earlier this year, the KU Hall of Fame inducted the 1976 and 1979 KU softball teams to recognize their participation in the College World Series. Among those team members honored were TJC member Louise French Johnson and Capital-Journal sports write Pam Clark. Congratulations to both from TJC!

GOLF CAPS FOR SALE

We have a limited number of golf caps for sale for $10 each. The caps are green with a denim bill and sport a Jayhawk with "Topeka Jayhawk Club" on the back. Caps are available now at Larry Tenopir's law office, 1610 SW Topeka. If we still have them in stock, they'll be for sale at the August picnic.

ONE AND ONLY CALL FOR KU PROGRAM AD

If you want your name special-listed in our TJC program ad, please send in how you want your name listed, along with the $25 donation to help underwrite the cost of the ad. Please be sure to mark your check "program ad" and mail to our PO Box no later than August 8.

TJC'S COOKIN

Several board members are investigating the feasibility of publishing a Topeka Jayhawk Club cookbook with recipes from KU celebrities and local TJC members. An update will follow at the summer picnic.

YOU ARE INVITED

TJC members are invited by the KU Courtsiders to welcome the KU Women's Basketball team back to Lawrence from summer vacation at a picnic on Sunday, August 29 at 4:00 pm at Broken Arrow Park (Louisiana St & 31st under the shelter-in Lawrence). Cost is $5 per person for meat and drinks. Guests named A-H are asked to bring a fruit or relish tray, I-O are asked to bring a dessert and P-Z are asked to bring a salad.

BUTTON, BUTTON, WHO'S GOT THE BUTTON

If you have joined as a new family membership in 1999, you may not have received one TJC button for each member of your family. If you're short one or more buttons, please call either our membership chairs, Bill & Cherrie Koehn, at 357-7666 or Larry Tenopir at 233-9467.

HAWK SURFING

If you have internet access, you may want to check out the official KU athletic website: www.jayhawks.org You may also want to check out a couple of unofficial sites: www.kuhoops.com/Links.shtmll and www.rockchalk.com/ and the Jayhawk Insider site: www.jayhawkinsider.com

HAWK CRUISING

A few cabins remain for the Caribbean cruise with the Topeka Jayhawk Club, KMAJ and the American Diabetes Association. The itinerary takes the ship all around Cuba, stopping in Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. The KMAJ morning show will be broadcasting live from the Carnival ship. From $1195 per person, airfare included. (And the best part for TJC is our club gets an $80 donation for each cabin sold which will help us keep membership dues at the same level while increasing the things we do for KU!) For more info, call JADE TRAVEL-273-1226.

TJC GOLF TOURNAMENT BREAKS LAST YEAR'S RECORD

The June 21 golf tournament netted more than $14,000 this year, easily breaking last year's net of approximately $10,000. Our special guests were Roy Williams and Terry Allen. Athletic Director Bob Frederick, other head coaches, assistant coaches and KU luminaries were also in attendance. TJC owes a debt to Charlie Hoag, Otto Schnellbacher, Debbie Vignatelli and the other members of the tournament committee as well as most of the board and other members who provided the tournament's volunteer staff. Our $500 sponsors who made the net possible were: Brier Development Co., Briman's Jewelers, Capital City Bank, Capitol Federal, Cardinal Cleaning, Current Electrical, Dutch Goose, Ferrell Construction, Gardner Floor, Golf Unlimited, Harrah's Casino, Kansas Building Systems, Laird Noller Ford, Latimer, Sommers & Assoc, Lower Heating & Air Conditioning, Mainline Printing, Martin Tractor, Meiers Ready-Mix, Nationsbank, H.T. Paul Co., Plumbing by Carlson, Popeye's Cardio-Fitness Center, Prairie Graphics, Bruce Price & Assoc., Ramberg & Assoc., Senne Construction, Southwestern Bell, U.S. Bankcorp Piper-Jaffray, and Yarrington Oldsmobile.

CHAUFFEUR SERVICE TO GAMES!

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, TJC is going to be able to offer rides from Topeka to both KU football and basketball home games this season. Through the generosity of Assisted Healthcare and its President, TJC member Gary March, rides will be available to TJC members. Riders will be asked to pay $7 per trip which will be used to offset the cost of the driver's ticket, parking and transportation expenses. We tried to set the cost to be equal or less than what one would normally spend in driving oneself and paying for turnpike and parking. The van which will be used will seat 7 passengers. First priority will be given to those who pay in advance for the whole football or basketball season. Single game riders will be accepted as space permits. Riders will gather at the Assisted Healthcare parking lot across from the Holidome at 7th & Fairlawn, and the van will take them to Lawrence and let them off at the door of the stadium or fieldhouse and pick thm up after the game. We are notifying those who previously called, but anyone else interested should call Larry Tenopir at 233-9467 to reserve your space.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DISCOUNT

Alumni Association members are being given a special discount to buy extra KU-NU tickets for KU friends. The Alumni Association ticket price is $30 instead of $40. The whole idea is to get the RED out of the stadium by filling it with BLUE! If you're an alumni association member, you can take up to 10 friends at this price. If you're not an alumni association member, call a friend who is so you can be one of the 10 friends.

BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS

The bad news is that we no longer have any TJC members in Germany. The good news is that we now have TJC members in Great Britain. Denis, Darci, Frank and George Depenbusch have moved countries and sent a nice note with their 1999 dues. Allan & Peggy Hazlett originally signed up the Depenbusches as members, and the Depenbusches are now returning the favor by not only sending in their dues and paying a year ahead for the Hazletts but by also making a generous donation to the club in Allan & Peggy’s name. The Hazletts send videotapes of KU games to the Depenbusches in Europe, but they only send the tapes of Jayhawk wins. So the Depenbusches brag that the Jayhawks are undefeated in Europe for the last four years!

LOTSA HAWKS

From the March 23, 1999, “Cappers’s Weekly”: Fred and June Holmes of Altoona have filled their home with over 5,000 items of KU memorabilia. Neither Holmes attended KU, but they sent two kids there, and they love the Hawks and have been collecting for 24 years. The collection takes up 4 of their 9 rooms. They had to remove a picture window to make room for the largest piece-a 9 x 12 foot Jayhawk. So, if you’re in Altoona, look up the Holmes.

SIGN UP A JAYHAWK BUDDY!

We’re again closing in on 1400 members (our year-end total last year) We’re asking all current TJC members to sign up just one additional TJC member. All of us know several Hawk fans who aren’t yet members, and if each of us signs up just one, we’ll hit our membership goal of 2000 members by the year 2000.
