MANGINO to KICK OFF
TJC SUMMER/FALL SEASON
Coach Mangino likes to visit the Topeka Jayhawk Club. "They're the real
fans!" he enthuses. That's why he gives up a Sunday evening to come
visit with our members and guests. Well, he's also coming to encourage
us all to be in the stadium in just a few short weeks. The barbecue
meal will feature beef and pork (you can think of it as tiger and
wildcat if it helps) along with side dishes, cookies and beverages. The
TJC band will play, and we'll raffle off some cool KU stuff! Don't miss
it. We've kept the cost as low as we could get it and were able to give
a price break to members. DON'T MISS IT! We have to guarantee our
numbers three days in advance, so reservations/pre-payment are
required. Don't wait. Back To Top |

NEW
LICENSE PLATES ON THE WAY
The 2007 TJC membership gift will be newly-designed license tags
featuring our favorite feathered friend. This will be our third license
tag, and since the last edition are getting weathered and our supply of
replacements has been depleted, the board thought it was time. Look for
them in December and January when you renew for 2007. Back To Top |

GOLF
TOURNAMENT HUGE SUCCESS
This story could write itself every year as our golf committee continues
to put on one heckuva show for participants who ante up for our annual
fundraiser. Each year the tournament clears thousands of dollars which
are sent over to KU. The amount we send each year is directly
attributable to the generosity of our sponsors which this year included:Bruce
Price & Assoc, Capital City Bank, Capitol Federal Foundation, Community
National Bank, Cotton O'Neill Clinic,Eventide Convalescent Center, Dr.
Mike McCoy, Dr. Robert Exon, DDS, Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center, Hayden
Tower Service, Jayhawk Beverage/Coors, Jeremiah Bullfrog's Bar &
Grille, Kevin Brennan Funeral Home, Laird Noller Motors, Lattimer,
Sommers & Assoc, Martin Tractor Company, McPherson Contractors, Inc.,
Murphy Tractor, Performance Tire & Wheel, Piper Jaffray, Ramberg &
Associates, Richardson Decorative Curbing, Signs to Go, Topeka Capital
Journal, Special thanks to Par for the Course Golf Shop, Emporia, KS.
THANKS TO ALL! Back To Top |

TJC
CONTRIBUTIONS TO KU
Our original intent when the golf tournament was started was to endow a
scholarship to create enough annual income to fully endow the costs of a
Topeka athlete every year. Eventually we discovered that with the
current returns on investments and ever-increasing costs for a student
athlete, it might take another twenty years to fully endow one
scholarship. So, the TJC board is working with KU Endowment and the
Department of Athletics to find another way to apply our ongoing
donations to fund something important and something which our
contributors can see. We expect to discuss this further in the next
several months, so expect to see more about this topic later. Back To Top |

KU MARCHING BAND HAS NEW
DIRECTOR
Former KU Marching Band director Jim Hudson has taken a new job at
Arizona State and been replaced by David Clemmer, coming to KU from Sam
Houston State. Under Hudson, the band increased from about 125 members
in 2003 to 200 last year. The goal is to increase membership to 300 in
the next three years. TJC was instrumental (so to speak) in initiating
the fundraising drive for new marching band uniforms which was part of
the first year of growth. Be in your seats for pregame for the first
game to see this year's edition of the Marching Jayhawks.

TJC SENDS TOPEKA KIDS TO
KANSAS RELAY
Several hundred local kids participating in Sertoma youth programs
attended the KU Relays courtesy of the Relays and TJC which provided
shirts for the kids. You'll start to see around Topeka the bright KU
blue shirts with KU Relays on the front and the TJC logo on the back. Back To Top |

WATERMELON FEED ON,
BUT NOT YET SCHEDULED
Over the last few years, TJC has taken on a long-standing service
project to provide watermelon/cantaloupe to the football team after a
late-August practice. Board members and other TJC members form a car
caravan to follow a truck-full of melons The date has not yet been set. Back To Top |

KU ALUMNI TO START LOCAL
AREA CHAPTER
The KU Alumni Association is organizing a local area chapter of the
alumni association to help the University and the association with all
its activities except athletics which will be left to the Topeka Jayhawk
Club. The alumni association held its first Topeka Jayhawk Generations
picnic June 22 at Gage Park during which KU freshmen were welcomed to
the Jayhawk family and taught the alma mater and Rock Chalk Chant. Back To

BEAKS &
TAILS
Topekan
Christopher John Hare is among 6 Fullbright Scholars from KU. His
scholarship will allow him to study in Germany.
The
KU Alumni Association is selling personal fans for $10 which are the
coolest (in both connotations) darn things. As you stare into the fan,
you see "GO"...then "JAYHAWKS". The words appear and disappear in many
different fashions, left-to-right, top-to-bottom, vice-versa, then they
explode and implode. There may be a use for the fans in hypnotherapy.
Order yours at www.kualumni.org
At the same
website, you can download miscellaneous Jayhawks suitable for kids to
color during summer vacation.
You can also play "name
that athlete" by identifying drawings in the Alumni Association's
murals.
The
KU School of Fine Arts is again planning its Collage Concert showcasing
various bands, vocal ensembles and presentations on visual art--all
desiged for those of us with short attention spans. The date is
September 8. Back To Top |
